At the beginning of the Civil War, both sides were unprepared for the casualties. After the first Battle of Bull Run, men with bullets in their legs had to walk twenty miles for medical treatment.

During the Civil War, Stonewall Jackson was the most feared of all Southern generals. Up North, mothers told their children to behave or "Stonewall will get you".

Abraham Lincoln's son was named Thomas. But he squirmed so much as a child that Lincoln gave him the nickname Tad (short for "tadpole").

Just before the battle of Antietam, one of General George McClellan's men discovered three cigars lying on the ground wrapped in a piece of paper. That piece of paper contained General Robert E. Lee's complete plans for the battle.

On the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg-one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. history-some soldiers noticed a sign near the cemetary. The sign warned anyone firing a gun would be fined five dollars. No fines were ever collected.
